National Elementary Honor Society

Leon Sheffield Magnet School Chapter
Selection Procedures
1. Candidacy
Fourth and fifth grade students’ academic records are reviewed to determine those who meet or exceed the required cumulative GPA of 95. These students are then identified as candidates.
2.  Candidate Data Collection
Students who are eligible scholastically (candidates) will be notified and informed that for further consideration for chapter membership, they are to complete the Candidate’s Form. This form outlines the candidate’s accomplishments in the areas of Responsibility, Service, and Leadership.  Those forms must then be submitted by the given deadline, as well as signed by students and parents that the content is complete and accurate.
3. Faculty Input
Faculty members will be given an evaluation form on which to rate each student with whom they have contact based on his/her demonstrated level of responsibility. This information will be combined with additional ratings regarding the candidate’s attendance and discipline obtained by the Chapter Advisor from the school’s official records.
4. Candidate Review
The Faculty Council, consisting of a teacher from grades three, four, and five, will review each candidate’s form in conjunction with the information obtained through faculty input. The Scholarship and Responsibility of each individual candidate will be reviewed carefully. Afterward, the Faculty Council votes on each candidate. Those receiving a majority vote will be invited for induction into the chapter. Any candidate not selected will have reasons noted.
5. Principal’s Review
Prior to notifying candidates, the Faculty Council’s deliberations will be reported to the principal for approval. A list will be provided of selected and nonselected students, as well as any reasons for nonselection. This will assure the support of the administration before notification.
6. Notification
Selected candidates and their parents will be informed, in writing, about the selection as well as the date for the induction ceremony. Any nonselected candidates will also be informed, in writing, addressing the reasons and the process for being selected the next year. After invitations are accepted or refused, the induction ceremony plans will be finalized.

Violin Concert

For several weeks, third grade students have had violin lessons.  This past week, the students go to show off their skills to their parents and grandparents.

Mr. Jacob Frank was their fearless leader.

He quizzed the students on different parts of the violin.

Here is Mrs. Borden's class performing.

Thanks Mr. Frank for inspiring our students!

Halloween

Wow, what a fun day we had at Leon Sheffield on Halloween.  Not only did the students get to wear their pajamas to school, but they got to participate in many fun Halloween festivities.

Parent volunteers helped students measure and weigh their pumpkin to make a graph.  Students then completed a series of questions to help them find more interesting facts about their pumpkin.

Students also did the Monster Mash with Dr. Poovey in the Adventure Lab.

They all were having a great time!

The specialists, led by Coach Albert and Mrs. Byrd, created a Haunted House maze in the Little Theatre.  The students had to listen to a witch tell a ghost story, go through the river to the cemetery where they were greeted by a zombie, crawl through the abandoned coal mine, walk past the display of former teachers, get their fortune told, and visit the mad scientist.  There were also a few "scary" surprises along the way.

Mrs. Jones played the zombie bride.

Former teacher "mummies."

Coach Albert blew students with a leaf blower.

The graveyard lit up.

All of the students and faculty that participated in the Haunted House.

THANK YOU to all the parents who volunteered their time to make Halloween extra special!

Community Service Project

Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Boyd's third grade classes joined forces and took on Decatur's Animal Shelter for their service learning project.  Money was collected from the children to purchase dog food, flea collars and leashes.  Also, each child painted a bandana for a pet to wear on adoption day.

Thanks for making an impact on our community!

Until next time,
LSMS

Spelling Bee

On October 25th, we held the annual Spelling Bee.

Top spellers from each classroom participated.  What a great group of spellers we have at LSMS!

Mrs. Ringler, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Glover were our judges.

Two of our students were wishing each other good luck before the bee began.

Students had a practice round before the actual bee began.

Mrs. Brewer was our awesome announcer.

Emma Harbin was waiting to spell a word.

Jack Wilson was correctly spelling a word to enter into round 5.

After ten rounds, Jacob Bailey was declared the 2012-2013 winner!
The winning word was:  Archaic.

Congratulations to our winners!
